New Week-long Course Prepares Job Seekers for Manufacturing Careers: MI Works!

Michigan Works! announced today that they are partnering with ToolingU to offer a FREE 1-week certification to help individuals kick start a career in manufacturing. The Certified Manufacturing Associate (CMfgA) credential is a nationally recognized certificate that provides a strong foundation in the industry and will help individuals jumpstart their careers in manufacturing.

The CMfgA credential takes 25 hours to complete, and individuals can receive the credential in one week by utilizing the onsite computer lab at Michigan Works! in Benton Harbor for five hours a day. Michigan Works! Berrien, Cass, Van Buren will be launching a new cohort every week, beginning on Monday, February 26.

Once complete, individuals will be prepared for high-demand, entry-level careers including assemblers, manufacturing associates, and production operators. In addition, the Michigan Works! team will connect individuals to employers in southwest Michigan. As an added benefit, every individual who completes the training will be entered into a drawing to receive a free laptop computer to help them with their job search and their future career planning.

To be eligible for this unique training opportunity, individuals must:

·        Be 18 years or older

·        Must have earned a High School Diploma or GED

·        Have a Social Security card

·        Have a driver’s license or State ID

·        If employed, individuals must submit their last two paystubs

“Manufacturing is the lifeblood for Michigan’s economy. For anyone who has ever wanted to pursue a career in manufacturing, this training will give you the keys to the industry and arm you with the knowledge you need to be successful,” said Mark O’Reilly, Director of Business Solutions at Michigan Works! Berrien, Cass, Van Buren.

The training will occur every week until June. The deadline to sign up will always be Wednesday at noon to begin training the following Monday. The first cohort begins on Monday, February 26 and the deadline to sign up is Wednesday, February 21 at noon. The training will be hosted at Michigan Works! in Benton Harbor, located at 499 West Main Street.

Once enrolled in the training program, individuals will be invited to utilize the computer lab at Michigan Works! Monday-Friday from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM. To learn more contact Chrissy Meek at MeekC@miworks.org.

The training is being offered through the Michigan Learning and Education Advancement Program (MiLEAP) grant from the Michigan Department of Labor and Economic Growth to respond to the economic impact of COVID-19 and help jobseekers gain skills and transition from education and training to employment
