Niles-Based NCP Coatings Grows Through Strategic Acquisition

NCP Coatings, a specialty manufacturer based in Niles, is expanding its footprint and capabilities with the acquisition of Glyptal Inc., a long-established producer of electrical insulation and automotive engine coatings.

The move marks NCP’s first acquisition under new private equity ownership and signals the company’s intent to grow by targeting high-performance, technical coating markets.

Glyptal, originally part of General Electric before spinning off, is best known for its insulating coatings used in electric motors, transformers, and similar industrial equipment. While the Glyptal name will remain, its operations will now be folded into NCP’s Niles headquarters.

“We’re excited to bring Glyptal into the NCP family,” said CEO Doug Mattscheck. “This acquisition opens new markets for us and strengthens our focus on technology-driven growth.”

NCP Coatings has served industrial and military clients for over 75 years, producing rugged coatings designed for tough environments. By bringing Glyptal’s electrical insulation expertise into the fold, NCP adds a new layer of specialization to its offerings.  NCP employs more than 100 people in Niles, according to business research websites.

The deal closed July 31, and Glyptal’s previous ownership group will help guide the transition over the next few months.

For Michigan’s Great Southwest, it’s an example of a locally based manufacturer expanding its reach—and its employment potential—without leaving the region behind.
