Niles-Buchanan YMCA Expansion Project Gets Challenge Grant Boost

The community phase of the Niles-Buchanan YMCA expansion project just got a potentially sizable anonymous boost in the form of a challenge grant from a local foundation that wishes to remain unidentified for the time being.

The Niles-Buchanan Y has been awarded a $25,000 matching challenge grant from the unidentified foundation for their capital expansion. The grant will be awarded contingent on support of the community phase of its Improving Health & Changing Lives capital campaign.

During the community phase of the campaign, which kicked off this month, the Y hopes to get members and the community involved to raise $25,000-$50,000 with small-dollar contributions. The $25,000 grant will be applied once the campaign contributions reach the $25,000 mark, doubling the money raised. So far $5,000 in donations have been collected.

The Niles-Buchanan YMCA is scheduled to break ground in August on the major expansion. The building improvements include a second gymnasium, youth and teen centers, fitness room, and additional space for preschool and Childwatch. Construction is expected to take six-to-eight months to complete.
