Now opening: new Silver Beach Playground

There’s good news for kids who want to use the new playground at Silver Beach County Park in St. Joseph.

Berrien County Parks Director Jill Adams told us Friday afternoon after about two years of work, they’re about to open the attraction.

“We are still doing a little bit of cleanup this afternoon,” Adams said. “We’re taking the fencing down, the construction fencing down around it, and it will be available and ready to play on this evening.”

Adams says they’re still figuring out some aspects of sand management at the playground, so pardon their dust…er, sand. She says it feels great to finally see this project come to fruition.

“All the staff in the county parks are just relieved to see that it came together like we had planned. It did take quite some time and a few different versions and changes through the time frame that we worked on it. But we’re just excited to see all of the work and the people in the sport come together.”

Adams says the new playground has a safety surface, and it could get hot in the sun. So, wear something on your feet if you’re using it on a hot day.

The $1.25 million playground replaces the 30-year-old equipment that was previously at the beach. That’s been donated to the village of Eau Claire. Adams says the new playground should last another 30 years.

Adams thanks all of the walkers who have had to deal with interruptions to pedestrian traffic during the playground’s installation for their patience.
