The Nuclear Regulatory Commission will discuss the 2023 safety performance of the Cook nuclear power plant during an open house meeting next week.
The NRC’s Prema Chandrathil tells us this is the yearly meeting for the public to talk directly with those who monitor the plant on a day to day basis.
“The NRC staff will be out there in person,” Chandrathil said. “That includes the NRC’s senior resident inspector and the resident inspectors who are based at the plant. They’re federal inspectors who go to work regularly over at the DC Cook plant, and they represent the United States Nuclear Regulatory Commission. They’ll be over there in person, available to address in person any questions or concerns from members of the public.”
Chandrathil says the NRC has determined the D.C. Cook plant operated safely during 2023 as all inspection findings and performance indicators were green or very low safety significance. As a result, the plant remains under the NRC’s baseline level of oversight, which still entails thousands of hours of inspection each year.
Anyone with questions or concerns about the Cook plant’s operations is invited to the open house next week. It will be Thursday at the Silver Beach Center in St. Joseph from 3 to 4:30 p.m.
