On Derby Day Silver Harbor Brewing Declares a Triple Crown Victory

While a remarkable ride by Justify won the first leg of horse racing’s Triple Crown on Saturday, just one block off of the parade route for the Blossomtime Grand Floral Parade a bunch of very happy people were celebrating a Triple Crown victory of their own in the eclectic world of craft brewing at Silver Harbor Brewing Company.

Having just been awarded a third Gold Medal in international competition, Silver Harbor declared it a Triple Crown achievement because it marked the third Gold Medal at three of the world’s largest, most competitive beer competitions — the 2018 World Beer Cup — in Nashville, Tennessee.

Silver Harbor Brewing Company’s already award-winning English Barley Wine, Shipfaced, claimed the gold in that category in Nashville, marking the third major competition to honor that beer with the top prize of all.

As a result, Shipfaced, the self-proclaimed, Triple Crown Winner, has now won Gold at three of the World’s largest, most competitive beer competitions:

  • 2018 World Beer Cup
  • 2017 US Beer Open
  • 2017 Great American Beer Festival

Essentially, Head Brewmaster & Co-Owner at Silver Harbor Brewing Company, Christian Cook has advanced from being a home brewer to taking the stage as a three-time Gold medal winner in less than 3 years. Cook was showing “happy face” after winning Gold at the 2018 World Beer Cup in Nashville on Thursday, May 3rd, 2018.

Cook says, “Every day I get the opportunity to do what I love and to be honored with three gold medals is unreal, it still feels like a dream.”

Cook’s partner in the business, Michael Gross, says, “Winning gold three times on the largest, most competitive, stage is amazing. We’re calling it the Triple Crown.  We’re proud to represent our community on the World stage and to be bringing back Gold.”

Silver Harbor Brewing Cmpany’s microbrewery is located in downtown St. Joseph, and specializes in house ales featuring local Michigan ingredients. Silver Harbor prides itself on always pushing the limits in flavor profiles and experimenting with small batch beers. With 15 beers on tap they have a breadth of offering for everyone.

Shipfaced, a 12.6-percent English Barleywine (beer) brewed with grains of paradise and bottle-conditioned for four months, is now a Triple Gold winner.

If you wanna get Shipfaced, you’d better hurry because it is a limited edition beer.

The 2018 World Beer Cup by the Brewers Association (BA) had 8,234 entries from 66 countries compete at the “Olympics of Beer” last week.

The Brewers Association — the not-for-profit trade association dedicated to small and independent American craft brewers—announced the results of the 2018 World Beer Cup awards. The largest competition to date, the awards were presented at the conclusion of the Craft Brewers Conference & BrewExpo America at Music City Center in Nashville.

Beers were judged during six sessions over a period of three days by an elite panel of 295 judges from 33 countries—72-percent of whom were from outside the United States. Judges evaluated 8,234 beers—a 25-percent increase in the number of entries from the 2016 World Beer Cup. Of the 2,515 participating breweries, 807 were from outside the United States.

Charlie Papazian is Founder & Past President of the Brewers Association. He contends, “Beer brings people together.” He also notes, “The World Beer Cup showcases the breadth of the global brewing community and winning an award symbolizes one of the greatest brewing achievements. Congratulations to all the winners on this remarkable accomplishment.”
