Paws to Read program returning to Coloma Public Library

Coloma Public Library and Koda

The Coloma Public Library is bringing back its “Paws to Read” program, giving school-aged children a chance to build reading confidence by reading aloud to a certified therapy dog in a calm, encouraging setting.

Barking up the reading tree, library officials are introducing Koda, a visiting therapy dog. Koda was trained through Canine Companions, a national organization that provides service dogs at no cost to people with disabilities. After completing his training, Koda transitioned into therapy work, where handlers say his gentle and affectionate nature made him a good fit.

He now works with The Bark Angels, a local therapy dog program that partners with organizations to provide comfort and support through certified dogs and their handlers.

“Paws to Read” sessions take place in the library’s Children’s Area on the second and fourth Wednesdays of each month from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. Each participating child receives a 15-minute reading slot.

Pre-registration is required, although limited drop-in spaces may be available. Families can register by calling 269-468-3431 or emailing info@colomapubliclibrary.net, and can find upcoming dates on the library’s website at www.colomapubliclibrary.net.
