Pharmhouse exits New Buffalo cannabis market; Backpack Boyz steps in

Pharmhouse Wellness has sold its New Buffalo Township dispensary for $3.5 million, closing a deal Sept. 10 with an affiliate of California brand Backpack Boyz, according to Crain’s Grand Rapids Business. The store, which opened in June 2024, is now listed as closed on Pharmhouse’s website.

Owner Casey Kornoelje told Crain’s the move was driven by tight margins and oversaturation, with more than a dozen dispensaries crowding into a township of fewer than 2,000 residents.

Backpack Boyz, known on the West Coast, is expanding into Michigan: directories already list planned or active locations in Monroe and Detroit, with job postings seeking staff. Whether the New Buffalo site will reopen under that brand remains unclear.

The deal highlights Michigan’s shifting cannabis market, where oversupply and pricing pressures are driving consolidation statewide.
