Power Strike Fitness Transitions from Old ‘Anytiime’ in St. Joseph

A few months ago, 22-year-old Karanpreet Singh was a gym member at St. Joseph’s Anytime Fitness Center, located on Hilltop Road.  Today, Singh is the new owner of the facility, renamed Power Strike Fitness.  It all happened fairly quickly—and Singh couldn’t be more excited about the opportunities ahead of him and his focus on his customers at the fitness center.

“We are going to be a community gym,” Singh told us, as he readied the facility for its Saturday reopening as Power Strike.  “We’re going to be about the customers and what they want and need.  As the new owner, I’m just the voice of the users.”

Singh said it was an easy decision NOT to be a nationally branded or franchised gym (like Anytime Fitness).  “They just want a gym, not a corporation.”  He said he wasn’t being critical of the former operators here, but simply sees little or no value in a franchise, which comes with many procedures and rules attached to it.

“The people just want a good gym,” Singh said. “They don’t want to have to sign up for six months or two years or jump thru hoops to use their membership.”   In fact, Power Strike will not have “members”, nor contracts.

“The people are my customers,” said Singh.  They just want to come in when they want to come in, and have good equipment in a clean, nice facility.   I’m not asking them to sign any contracts or make any commitments.  If they like it here, they’ll come back.”

Singh says he will honor contracts that were made with the former Anytime Fitness facility.  “We’ll figure out what they have coming and we’ll mutually agree to it and they’ll get what they paid for,” he said.  But going forward, there’ll be customers, not members.

Power Strike will operate 24/7, with pre-paid electronic access via smart phone, because that’s what customers want:  flexibility built around their personal schedules.  Singh said if someone needs one, they can still issue a ‘key fob’ for access.this

Karanpreet Singh told us, “I’m a local kid from St. Joe.  I went to Brown School and Upton and graduated from SJHS in 2019.”   Singn went to Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo and got a degree in bio-medical sciences this year.  Eventually he wants to pursue a medical degree.  However, Singh told us, “Business is in my blood.  I grew up in it.”  Singh’s parents are the owners of a successful convenience store and gas station, Sunny Spot, at Pipestone and Empire in Benton Harbor.  He said it just feels natural for him to purchase and operate his own business as he plots a course for the rest of his life.

Power Strike Fitness is located at 1332 Hilltop Road, Suite C, next to Liquor Cabinet in what many call the Hilltop Shopping Center.
