Present Pillars will host its Spring Expungement Resource Fair, aimed to support and provide resources to individuals pursuing expungement of Michigan-based convictions. The event will take place on Saturday March 15, 2025, from noon to 4:00 p.m. at the First Church of God Benton Heights campus, located at 990 N Euclid Avenue, Benton Harbor.

Over the past two years, Present Pillars has helped more than 300 individuals navigate the expungement process, with over 160 people served at their last event alone. This year, Present Pillars is committed to reaching even more people, in partnership with the Michigan State Police, Safe & Just Michigan, Legal Aid of Western Michigan, and others.

“Old criminal convictions should not define who a person is today, and yet too often they do,” said Kamau Sandiford of Safe & Just Michigan. “Which is why providing expungement services to the public is so essential—because it allows people to redefine who they are.”

Expungement is a critical legal process that allows individuals to have certain criminal records removed from public view. This process offers a fresh start for those who have faced legal challenges, significantly affecting their ability to secure employment, housing, and other opportunities. By clearing these records, expungement not only restores dignity but also strengthens families and communities by removing barriers that hinder financial stability and personal growth.

James Gunter, Executive Director of Present Pillars, emphasized the importance of this initiative, “We believe in second chances and creating opportunities for individuals to rebuild their lives. Expungement is a crucial step toward economic stability, employment, and housing. We’re committed to ensuring that every eligible person gets the support they need to move forward.”

Present Pillars invites residents from Berrien, Cass, and Van Buren Counties, as well as surrounding areas, to participate. Those attending will have the opportunity to take the first step toward a new beginning.
