Red Arrow Highway closure next week in Stevensville

Red Arrow Highway in Stevensville will be closed for part of next week while the Michigan Department of Transportation works on the new I-94 bridge at exit 23.

MDOT spokesperson Nick Schirripa says the closure starts Tuesday as crews set bridge beams.

“We can’t have live traffic under that activity,” Schirripa said. “So, we’ve got to close Red Arrow Highway for a couple of days. On Tuesday, May 14, both northbound and southbound of the highway will be closed. Detours will be posted, relatively short. So, it shouldn’t be too much of a problem for just a day.”

From Wednesday, May 15, through Friday, May 17, there will be one lane of northbound Red Arrow Highway open to traffic. Southbound Red Arrow Highway will be detoured on westbound I-94 to John Beers Road, and then back to Red Arrow Highway.

By next weekend, one lane will be back open in each direction.

Schirripa says this represents major progress in the I-94 project.

“We’ve demolished the old bridges and then the beams are kind of the skeleton for the new bridge. The beams are what the deck rides on. So this is the start of rebuilding those bridges and that will take most of the year.”

This work is part of MDOT’s three-year, $204 million project to rebuild 8.5 miles of I-94 and four bridges, as well as repair nine other bridges, between Puetz Road and Britain Avenue.

Drivers are thanked for their patience while this major work is completed.
