River Saint Joe in Buchanan Encourages All to Embrace the Cold With River Rocks

It’s winter, folks. It’s time to embrace the cold and take up River Rocks at Southwest Michigan’s unique farmstead brewery called River Saint Joe in Buchanan.

The organic farmstead brewery which is approaching it’s first anniversary in March following a year of pandemic ups and downs wants everyone to experience their new, socially-distanced, outdoor winter game, coined “River Rocks.” It is, essentially, a mix of shuffleboard and curling on 50′ x 25′ lanes of solid ice.

Brian Dougherty, CEO of River Saint Joe, says: “This is an opportunity for friends and family to get outdoors, embrace the cold, and feel more comfortable in the time of COVID. Dressed warmly, it’s something that people would enjoy doing in winter, pandemic or not.”

Lots of folks have been raving about the game on social media having discovered River Rocks since the game debuted last month on several icy lanes at River Saint Joe, which is located at 15475 Walton Road in Buchanan.

You can book for 1 or 2 hours, for parties of 2 or 4 people to hurl “stones” down the ice lanes – kept frozen with a chiller – toward a target. River Rocks is in addition to River Saint Joe’s everyday offerings of deliciously crafted beers and farm-to-table fare, which can be enjoyed at tented and heated tables or fire pits overlooking RSJ’s home, the beautiful 180 acre Flatwater Farms.

River Saint Joe had been working for 5 years towards an opening in Spring 2020, only to face stay-at-home orders and indoor dining bans, like the rest of the hospitality industry, but that didn’t stop them from welcoming guests and pursuing their mission of sustainability and community well-being. Their extensive outdoor space has turned out to be ideal during these challenging times, drawing lots of attention from avid fans.

Of River Rocks, Doughtery adds: “So far the response has been extremely positive.  Midwesterners can handle the cold, and we’re all about embracing the seasons here at RSJ.”
