A holiday music tradition continues Sunday, December 21, when the South Haven Performance Series presents Vox GR, the premier professional choral ensemble in West Michigan.
Since its founding in 2010 the Performance Series has concluded its season by celebrating the holidays with a concert free of charge to the public. Donations toward the 2026 Series are accepted.
The 4 p.m. concert will be presented at Peace Lutheran Church, 06321 Blue Star Memorial Hwy, South Haven, MI 49090.
Vox GR, led by Artistic Director Dr. Christopher Mason, was formed in 2022 and all the ensemble’s members are professional singers who reside in Michigan. Vox GR performs a wide repertoire of choral music stretching across all eras from composers of diverse backgrounds.
The concert program theme is Northern Lights: Journey to the North with Vox GR it will be centered around tunes that celebrate nature, the winter season, and Christmas. Ranging from traditional carols and African American Spiritual, to pieces sung in Latin, German and Tagalong, the concert culminates in a celebration of the northern lights as recalled in Latvian folk song and the journals of arctic explorers.
Vox GR has the mission of enriching West Michigan through compelling performances, community music making, and educational engagement for diverse populations. They seek to transform their audience with high-caliber choral music that moves the heart, engages the intellect, and honors our diversity.
Vox GR was named the 2024 American Prize second place winner in the Professional Choir Division. The American Prize program rewards the best recorded performances by individual artists and ensembles in the United States at the professional, community/amateur, college, university, church and school levels.
Christopher Mason is Director of Choral Activities at the University of Minnesota Duluth where he directs the flagship University Singers and teaches secondary choral methods, conducting, and ear training.
“We’re delighted to share wonder, mystery, and joy as expressed in the intimate expressions of the human voice,” said Mason. “We believe in the power of music, presented in this intimate way, to affect listeners deeply. In a world where busyness is pervasive, we hope this experience moves your hearts, engages your minds, and reunites you with your own inner stillness and eternal beauty.”
The South Haven Performance Series is an all-volunteer community-based organization committed to providing a rich mixture of musical arts for area residents and visitors. Most concerts are held during the summer months with the additional holiday concert.
