SJ Kids Clothing Designer Hosts Charity Show

A St. Joseph woman who has developed her own successful online children's clothing and accessories business called Flyby Kids will share her success with the community by hosting a charity Flyby Kids Trunk Show at Fire & Ice Pizzeria & Creamery in a couple of weeks to benefit The Alex Mandarino Foundation.

Laura Meyer became somewhat of a cult hero when she recognized that parents everywhere bemoaned the fact that keeping up with growing children is not an easy task. Rather than suffering in silence, Meyer created ObyRollz. The ingenious design stems from her battle over the fact that her second child had to wear pants larger than his age since the day he was born. She would roll up his pant legs, but the more mobile he became, the pants would come undone and he would end up tripping. In search of a solution that would avoid permanent alterations involving cutting and sewing since she wanted to use the pants as her son got taller or pass them down to future children, she went through lots of trial and error before crafting ObyRollz.

The design is described as being "fun, functional, and easy-to-use." The new cuffs fit over each pant leg and, with a few simple folds, firmly secure them in place. She also designed them to be reversible, with stylish patterns that both kids and parents love.

Thanks to the demand for additional clothing and accessories, Flyby Kids was created, and all of Meyer's products are made with soft, breathable fabrics that are comfortable for children to wear, yet moisture-wicking with a soil release finish that parents appreciate.

Flying and aviation are a way of life for the Meyer family and the Flyby Kids is part of their plan to help children "Let Their Dreams Fly" with ongoing sales.

Laura tells me that she designs all of the products right in St. Joe and then works with a pattern maker and manufacturer in North Carolina to produce everything. All Flyby Kids products are made with high quality natural and/or organic fabrics. She also uses a U.S.-based fabric company that prides itself on an eco-friendly dye printing process. In addition to the ObyRollz, she also has designed headbands, beanies, drool bibs (dribs), snap belts, the Avi dress, and more.

Laura says, "Our products may be more expensive due to the fact that we design and manufacture everything in the USA and use such high quality and organic fabrics for our products, but we like to dress our own children in comfortable, high quality clothing and accessories and feel that most parents prefer to do the same."

The upcoming Flyby Kids Charity Trunk Show is slated for Sunday, February 12th from noon until 3pm at the Fire & Ice Pizzeria & Creamery at 3848 Niles Road next to the Red Cross Office, and it is a benefit for the Alex Mandarino Foundation, a St. Joseph charity dedicated to funding research for a cure to childhood cancer as well as providing financial assistance to families in SW Michigan whose children have cancer.

Laura hopes to have a strong turnout because the more people that come, the more they will be able to donate to the foundation.
