There wasn't much left that Jeff Curry of Niles hadn't been involved in at Lake Michigan College, and now, thanks to the resignation of Board Member Stephen Small, Curry has achieved another item on his bucket list — becoming a member of the LMC Board of Trustees. Curry is Sales Director for Stay Metrics Corporation in South Bend, and a former VP at United Federal Credit Union in St. Joseph.

Curry was sworn in this evening at the LMC Board meeting within seconds of his appointment by the board on a unanimous vote in the Mendel Center's Executive Board Room. He told his new colleagues, "This is great…I’ve been involved in the community college for so long it just feels real natural."  Curry replaces Stephen Small, who tendered his resignation to Board Chair Mary Jo Tomasini late last week, apparently preparatory to his hopes of garnering a faculty position in the future. In order to accomplish that task, he cannot be a board member, and will have to be sidelined for at least a year under board policy established several years ago.

Curry says he felt it was "a natural fit." He had interviewed previously with the board, hopeful of gaining an appointment, citing his involvement with the Winners Circle Auction where he and his wife Diane have been actively engaged for years, including a stint as co-chairs of the charity function. He also has served as President for the last several years of the Lake Michigan College Foundation, and was active in the recent capital campaign to build the Hanson Technology Center christened last week on the Napier Avenue Campus.

Curry has also served on the school board for the public school system in Niles, where he says, "We make aggressive use of the relationship, and have a great relationship, with the college. We have well over a hundred of our high school students in Niles going to college at LMC."

Additionally, Curry ran a Niles company called Express 1, where he actively utilized the resources of Lake Michigan College to attract, train and retain the workforce that "got us to the point to where we were very successful as a top 100 logistics company in the country, and we started off very small." He says to be able to do that, "You have to have the human resources, and human resources come from here, from the college. That's very important to me, so I realize that LMC is a key element of our economy."

Curry's appointment took effective immediately open his swearing in, and he even seconded a board motion a short while later, jumping in to the task feet first.
