Southwestern Michigan College has broken ground on its new wrestling facility.

SMC says it’s expanding the Charles O. Zollar Building to accommodate the new wrestling program. The Zollar upgrade will quadruple the wrestling program’s space from just under 2,700 square feet in temporary quarters in the Dale A. Lyons Building to just under 11,200 square feet.

SMC’s Mike O’Brien says since the wrestling team was brought back, it swept the MCCAA duals meet, won the conference championship, finished third in the Great Lakes District, and sent nine wrestlers to the NJCAA National Championships. He’s expecting the Roadrunners to experience even more success with the new quarters.

The groundbreaking for the facility was held last week.

The SMC Board of Trustees voted unanimously to revive the college’s athletics programs after a more than 25-year hiatus in 2022.
