Southwestern Michigan College & Berrien Springs HS team up for classical concert Thursday

SMC BSHS 2026

A large-scale choral collaboration is set to fill the stage in Berrien Springs later this week, bringing together student, community and high school performers for an evening of classical music.

Southwestern Michigan College will present its spring concert, “Royal Resonance,” at 7 p.m. Thursday, April 9, at the Berrien Springs High School Performing Arts Center, 201 Sylvester Avenue.

The concert features approximately 150 voices from SMC’s Collegiate Chorale, the regional Chorllennium ensemble, and the Berrien Springs High School choir, accompanied by a 27-piece symphony orchestra. The combined groups are directed by SMC Director of Choral Activities David Carew.

At the center of the program is Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s “Coronation Mass,” widely regarded as one of the composer’s most celebrated sacred works. The performance will also include a mix of choral selections spanning multiple eras and styles, offering a broad showcase of the choral tradition.

Organizers say the larger Berrien Springs venue was selected to accommodate the unusually large combined ensemble, creating a rare opportunity for student singers to perform alongside a full orchestra.

In addition to SMC performers, the concert highlights collaboration with area musicians, including Berrien Springs High School choir members and Chorllennium, a southwest Michigan-based ensemble of educators and experienced vocalists.

The event is open to the public and is expected to appeal to fans of classical music as well as those interested in supporting local student performers.
