Spectrum Health Lakeland Boss Next on the Lakeshore Chamber Docket

With a stated goal of connecting business and the community, the Lakeshore Chamber of Commerce is poised to advance its series of networking opportunities they call Leadership Connections, this time with Guest Speaker Dr. Loren Hamel, President of Spectrum Health Lakeland and Chief Strategy Officer for Spectrum Health based in Grand Rapids.

Underwritten by the co-sponsorship of Tosi’s Restaurant, the Lakeshore Chamber’s next Leadership Connections event is coming Monday, June 17th at 5pm and is slated to take place at Tosi’s located at 4337 Ridge Road in Stevensville.

Ashlie Guyberson is President of the Lakeshore Chamber. She says, “One of the goals of the Lakeshore Chamber of Commerce is to connect businesses and the community,” adding, “We started the Leadership Connection series to create an environment where business owners and the greater community can get an exclusive ‘insider peek’ into the happenings of local businesses, to better understand how it impacts our community. We are eager to continue this series and are honored that Dr. Hamel has accepted our invitation to be the guest speaker at our next event.”

As CEO, Dr. Hamel successfully integrated into the Lakeland system the largest multi-specialty medical practice in Berrien County along with the former Community Hospital, Watervliet, and Hospice at Home, which resulted in the area’s only dedicated hospice residence.

Organizational culture improvements are a hallmark of Dr. Hamel’s leadership. Through his “Bring Your Heart to Work” initiative, featured in Harvard Business Review, he shared his vision for connecting caregivers’ tasks to the heartfelt needs of those they serve. Under Dr. Hamel’s leadership, Lakeland launched a system-wide electronic health records system and the organization became first in the state of Michigan, as well as in the region, to be certified at Stage 7 by HIMSS Analytics.

Dr. Hamel was a founding member of Affirmant Health Partners – the state’s largest clinically integrated network, composed of six of Michigan’s leading health systems, to deliver high-quality, cost-effective healthcare and improve the health of residents. He was named Chairman of Affirmant Health Partners in July of 2017. Dr. Hamel serves as past president and current board member for the Michigan Health and Hospital Association Executive Committee. He is on the board for the Southwest Michigan Economic Growth Alliance and co-chair of the Michigan’s Great Southwest Leadership Council.

Dr. Hamel graduated with honors from Andrews University in Berrien Springs, before going on to the Loma Linda University School of Medicine in Loma Linda, California. He also holds a master’s degree in health services administration from the University Of Michigan School Of Public Health. An experienced family physician, Dr. Hamel treated southwest Michigan residents for 23 years at University Medical Specialties in Berrien Springs.

The Lakeshore Chamber Leadership Connections event is free of charge for Chamber Members and $10 per person for non-members. Light appetizers will be served with a cash bar available.
