One of the newest positive tests for COVID-19 this week has been identified as the Chief Operating Officer of Spectrum Health Lakeland, Dr. Lowell Hamel. He is the twin brother of the hospital’s President & CEO Dr. Loren Hamel, and word of his diagnosis was delivered to the staff of the hospital in a brief video update to the medical team this week which has surfaced on social media.
Dr. Loren Hamel created the weekly update on Friday and posted it to YouTube for dissemination to the staff at Spectrum Health Lakeland. He addresses a number of things including mounting financial losses at the facility before sharing the news of his brother’s diagnosis for the coronavirus.
Hamel says that his brother hadn’t been feeling well for several days and had stayed at home in a bid to limit exposure to key personnel, but is now in the COVID Unit at the St. Joseph Hospital, and “doing well.”
Lowell Hamel also serves as the Chief Medical Officer at Spectrum Health Lakeland, and his brother Loren shared sobering news about the impact of the pandemic on the hospital identifying $7.6-million in losses racked up just during the month of March alone.
The hospital’s CEO includes a plea to staff to stay healthy, keep costs under control, and concludes with an Easter message.
