Video gamers familiar with Super Mario know that, as with many other games, there are many hurdles along the way to winning. They also know that a determined Super Mario can get the job done, and there’s tangible proof of that with a real life Super Mario right here in Michigan’s Great Southwest.

Mario Jenkins might shy away from the moniker Super Mario, but he’s proven to be super in every other regard as he has established the fledgling barbershop business along Red Arrow Highway in St. Joseph that he calls New Era Cuts.

Jenkins certainly earned his “Super Mario” rights by single-handedly building his beautiful new space literally from the ground up all through the pandemic quarantine period. All day every day he was hard at it installing new floors, painting everything in sight, hanging mirrors, artwork, sports banners and other team memorabilia, large flat screen TVs that showcase sports every minute that the shop is open, and three luxurious and professional barber chairs in red and black leather, along with all of the other tools of his trade.

Mario says he was inspired by his mother who opened her first beauty salon 25 years ago in 1995, and worked at her trade until she retired seven years ago in 2013.

Born and raised in Southwest Michigan, Mario attended St. Joseph High School where he played football and ran track until finishing up in 2002. He admits “It took a little time to figure out what I wanted to do in life,” however, after finally selecting his mother’s career track and heading to cosmetology school in 2012, he graduated three years later and beginning working shortly thereafter for Great Clips.

Mario stayed with Great Clips for close to three years running, but decided to go “the booth rental route,” and got his feet wet with all of the in’s and out’s of barbering for a couple of years before decided to step out onto his own, creating his dynamic space at New Era Cuts, located at 3914 Red Arrow Highway, in the small commercial strip next to Season’s Pass, the sports gear lover’s paradise.

He’s been well received thus far, and says, “I’m excited to bring what I have to offer to the pople. I’ve dedicated the last 8 years to craft my skills in this field, hoping one day I’d have the opportunity to own my own shop. That time is finally now.”

Now a Licensed Professional Barber for more than five years, Mario is open for business Monday through Friday from 9am until 6pm and Saturdays from 8am until 4pm. You can arrange for an appointment online at this link: https://www.neweracuts2020.com/book-online

You can also call for an appointment at 269-325-4456.

You’ll like the good vibes at New Era, especially if you hearken back to that “old school” type of atmosphere, but with a touch of modern swag.

Mario’s stated purpose at New Era Cuts is straight forward: To not only provide you with a euphoric feel, but to bring sensation and confidence to your life. He adds, “No matter what ethnicity or background you come from, at New Era, we stand by change, which inspires us to inspire you!”
