St. Joseph fourth grader raising money to help starving families in Sudan

A fourth-grade student at Lincoln Elementary in St. Joseph is having an impact across the world and demonstrating that anyone can make a difference by raising money for staving families in Sudan.

10-year-old Clementine Hackworth tells us she read an article about the famine that has nearly five million people facing extreme hunger in the war-torn country. She decided she wanted to do something to help.

“I just thought that it was really hard to think about how kids like me, younger or older, were dying from that and they couldn’t help it,” Clementine said. “And that made me just really sad.”

Clementine told her dad, and he suggested a crowdfunding campaign. The two found a suitable non-profit to support and set up a Go Fund Me, “Clementine’s Sudan Famine Relief Effort.”

Clementine says she told friends, family, neighbors, and people at school about it and they started donating. Now, the campaign has collected more than $2,100. How’s it feel?

“It makes it feel like that thing that you’re trying to do really matters and that people care.”

All donations will be sent to Proximity 2 Humanity, a 501(c)(3), directed to the Mutual Aid Sudan Fund. Clementine’s dad tells us the crowdfunding campaign has already raised enough to feed 50 families for two weeks.

The campaign started with a goal of $1,400, but it’s been raised to $2,400 and anyone can support it. You can do so right here.
