St. Joseph moving toward rezoning for property owned by Whirlpool

St. Joseph City Commissioners have given their first reading to a rezoning requested by Harbor Shores Community Redevelopment for property at 230 Upton Drive as the organization considers future development there.

Speaking to commissioners this week, Community Development Director Kristen Gundersen said this is a 2.5-acre parcel currently used as a parking lot. Harbor Shores requested that it be rezoned from a Heavy Industrial District to a Water Recreation District. Gundersen said future development at the site would still require city commission approval.

“Anything that is in the W Water Recreation District does require a planned unit development for any future development on the property and the applicant probably will be doing that sometime in the future,” Gundersen said.

The rezoning is being sought by Harbor Shores Community Redevelopment on behalf of Whirlpool, which actually owns the property.

Gundersen said the St. Joseph Planning Commission has already reviewed the request and unanimously recommended its approval.

Commissioners had no comment and held the first reading on the rezoning. The second and final reading will be at a commission meeting in July.
