St. Joseph seeks input for new wayfinding signage project downtown

The City of St. Joseph is seeking local input on a signage project that will help welcome and guide visitors through downtown.

On Tuesday, April 4th from 5 to 7 p.m., city officials, the Downtown Development Authority and consultants from Corbin Design are inviting residents to City Hall to introduce the concept of wayfinding and discuss the ways it will benefit the community.

Corbin will ask attendees to describe how they see St. Joseph, and also ask questions about the area, including the top destinations and hidden gems in St. Joseph that visitors should know about.

“[Corbin has] some design ideas and questions they want to talk to the community about,” said St. Joseph Assistant City Manager Emily Hackworth, during Monday’s city commission meeting. “We would love lots of community engagement, so please mark the calendar and share the word.”

The goal of the effort is to implement cohesive signage throughout Downtown St. Joseph, and improve awareness of the downtown area and its key points of interest and destinations.

According to Corbin Design, a properly designed wayfinding and signage system “integrates with the surrounding architecture, design, landscape, and environment to orient and guide users effectively within the space.”

Corbin is based in Traverse City, and has installed hundreds of wayfinding projects across North America. Other city projects include Los Angeles, Milwaukee, Indianapolis, Grand Rapids and East Lansing.
