One of Southwest Michigan’s most beloved summertime traditions returns Wednesday, July 3, as the skies over St. Joseph burst into color and the sounds of Americana fill the air. The annual Independence Eve celebration pairs the Southwest Michigan Symphony Orchestra’s patriotic “Salute to America” concert with a spectacular fireworks display over Lake Michigan, drawing thousands of locals and visitors to Silver Beach County Park and downtown St. Joseph.
Hosted once again at the picturesque Shadowland Pavilion at Silver Beach, the SMSO concert kicks off the evening’s festivities at 8:30 p.m., with gates opening at 7:30 p.m. This year’s program promises a rousing, all-American soundtrack featuring crowd favorites from composers like John Philip Sousa, Aaron Copland, and Leonard Bernstein, alongside moving tributes to veterans and active-duty military. The major sponsor of the observance this year is Corewell Health.
SMSO officials say the event has become a highlight of their summer season, blending the power of live orchestral music with the patriotic spirit of Independence Day.
“Performing outdoors on the shore of Lake Michigan, with the community gathered and the sun setting behind us — it’s a uniquely St. Joe experience,” said SMSO Music Director Matthew Aubin, who will once again conduct the orchestra. “It’s one of those concerts that gives you goosebumps — both from the music and the setting.”
The evening culminates in a dazzling fireworks show at approximately 10 p.m., with the grand finale timed to coincide with the concert’s closing selections. The combination of live music and pyrotechnics over the lakefront has made July 3 in St. Joseph a cherished tradition for local families and visitors alike.
There will be on site food trucks and beer and wine available for purchase inside the concert venue.
Tickets for the concert at the Pavilion are available now through the Southwest Michigan Symphony Orchestra’s website. General admission lawn tickets are $25 in advance or $30 at the gate. Reserved seating options are also offered, and children 12 and under are free in the lawn area with a paid adult. Attendees are encouraged to arrive early for parking and prime viewing.

City and county officials remind the public that crowds and traffic around Silver Beach and downtown St. Joseph will be heavy before and after the event. Pedestrians and drivers are urged to exercise patience and follow posted detours and directions from law enforcement.
Whether it’s your first time or an annual tradition, the July 3rd celebration in St. Joseph offers a stirring, family-friendly way to kick off the Independence Day holiday — with world-class music, community spirit, and fantastic fireworks lighting up the sky over Michigan’s Great Southwest.
