Stray Bullet from Gunfire at Broadway Park Leaves Woman Critically Injured

After what appears to have been a stray bullet left a Benton Harbor woman hospitalized in critical condition, the Benton Harbor Department of Public Safety is asking the public to help identify those responsible for “this senseless act of violence.”

Deputy Director Michael Clark has issued a public appeal for help in identifying several people who were “observed running from Broadway Park,” so authorities can determine their involvement in the incident Saturday night shortly after 11pm.

Clark says one of the department’s patrol officers heard gunfire in the area of Broadway Park at 11:05 last night, Saturday, November 23rd. While responding, officers were told that a 66 year old woman had been struck by gunfire in her own home near the park.

Officers found that a 66 year old woman who lives in the 900 Block of Pavone was lying in bed watching TV when a bullet entered the residence and struck her. She was taken to Spectrum Health Lakeland and is currently in critical condition there.

Benton Harbor Department of Public Safety officers located evidence in Broadway Park indicating where the shooting may have taken place and say that it does not appear that the woman hit in her own home was the intended target of the shooting.

The department wants to know who was involved in the shooting at the park and they are also  reviewing the local exterior residential security cameras  in that neighborhood as well.

Clark asks that anyone with information please contact the Tipline at 269-927-0293, Crime Stoppers at 1-800- 342-STOP (7867) or via their BHDPS app that can be found in your cell phone app store.

Benton Harbor authorities were assisted on the scene by the Michigan State Police Mobile Crime Unit and the Berrien County Sheriff’s Department during the course of the investigation.
