The Berrien County Parks Department is thanking everyone who came out to its free community recycling event on Tuesday.
Berrien County Parks Director Jill Adams said Thursday the event at Lake Michigan College was “overwhelmingly popular.”
“We had 760 vehicles come through, which is an 11% increase over last year and a five-year high,” Adams said.
Adams says the perfect weather may have been a factor and thanked the staff and volunteers. She said these recycling events, which the county has been holding for more than two decades, have been a benefit to residents.
“These community recycling events are offered free, or nearly free, to Berrien County residents. There is a fee charged on three items that are collected, and the cost to safely dispose of and recycle these materials is quite high. However, the money used to pay for this event does not come from taxpayer dollars.”
Adams said preparations for the event began about eight months ago, and staff worked feverishly until the last minute to ensure all went off without a hitch. In particular, she credited Environmental Property Manager Jaysen Field and Assistant Environmental Property Manager Genevieve Graves.
The next county recycling event will be next month in Buchanan.
