Michigan retailers are not feeling good about the future. The latest survey from the Michigan Retailers Association showed retail sales plunged from April to May. The MRA’s Andrea Bitely said there was also a ten point drop in the number of retailers feeling optimistic about the three month summer selling season.
“People aren’t coming in and doing the shopping that’s to be expected, and that’s not a good thing in retail,” Bitely said. “You want to see that foot traffic or those online orders, and to be frank, our members are not seeing those numbers that they expected, and that is bringing down their outlook overall and it brought down their sales in May.”
The May Retail Index survey came in at 50.7, a large decrease over April’s 60.6. 39% of Michigan retailers reported a sales increase over April. 31% percent noted a decrease, and 30% reported no change.
