The Evolution of CustomMetal in St. Joe

CustomMetal Products of St Joseph first emerged onto the scene in 1964 as a specialty metal fabrication business. The family owned company has evolved over the years in order to continue to grow, yet they still have the very first customer they signed on with 52 years ago.

Larry Bowman and his family anchor a key corner in the City of St. Joseph's Hawthorne Industrial Park with a small but effective team of specialists armed with state-of-the-art CNC equipment and software that enables them to provide flexible manufacturing at the lowest cost while still maintaining consistently high quality standards.

CustomMetal Products is located at 180 Kerth Street, across the street from Shepherd Casters, a part of the Colson Group. Bowman's team specializes in punching, bending, and designing products out of many different types of steel and other materials. The CustomMetal crew has proven expertise to take products all the way from initial design phases into prototyping and even full production.

Over the last half century, the design team has supplied such companies as Whirlpool Corporation, Gast Manufacturing, Rosback Company, Printek and many other local, regional, national and international manufacturers. As the company evolves, Bowman has recently provided patio decking, design railing, staircases, and restaurant stainless steel kitchen work stations, tables, benches and shelving to an entirely new range of clientele. The recent push into those markets has delivered an entirely new set of skills and expertise to potential clients.

CustomMetal can now assist not only the manufacturing industry, but the hospitality industry including restaurants and other entities and even home owners interested in patio, railing, stairway and other construction ideas and concepts taking things from the idea stage all the way to manufacturing.

The construction bays at CustomMetal maintain a steady inventory of at least a ton of common gauge sheet metal to ensure quickly and timely turnaround on most projects, and they recycle all scrap metal to reduce waste and save resources. From custom solutions and competitive pricing to on-time delivery and proven expertise, CustomMetal is proud of its 52 year tradition. The CustomMetal welding team shares a combined 30+ years of experience for precision and quality, and their in-house painting facility offers air-dry or baked-paint services. The team even handles pre- and sub-assembly services all the way to finished parts for clients everywhere.

A recent steady stream of local restaurant work has put CustomMetal Products solidly on the map of innovation, and helping the evolution to keep the company growing into it's second half-century in business.
