‘Time to retire’: Van’s Pharmacy to close permanently

A local pharmacist is hanging up his lab coat and closing the doors on a long-running local pharmacy.

Van’s Pharmacy owner and pharmacist Jim Bussis said the pharmacy has sold its prescription records to Walgreens, and will close permanently after its last day Monday, August 22.

“It’s time to retire,” said Bussis, who took over the pharmacy in 2010. “We’ve really appreciated our customers’ loyalty and the opportunity to take care of them. We hope that we’ve done a good job for them and kept them healthy.”

Van’s Pharmacy had a long history in the Twin Cities, from the Van Antwerp family’s original store nearly 100 years ago through the COVID-19 pandemic, Van’s has had a long tradition of pharmacy service in the Benton Harbor-St. Joseph area.

Bussis said Van’s Pharmacy has been open in its current location near the intersection of Napier Avenue and Niles Avenue since 1968, adding there was a pharmacy in that spot for years prior.

He said there are no plans for a new pharmacy to take its place.
