Two Berrien County Deputies Graduate from Corrections Academy with High Honors

Two members of the Berrien County Sheriff’s Office Jail Division recently completed an intensive training program designed to prepare local corrections officers for the many challenges of the job—and they didn’t just pass, they excelled.

Deputy Anthony Lardizabal and Deputy Hosanna Thiele both graduated from the Corrections Academy hosted by the Genesee County Sheriff’s Office. The 160-hour program is packed with hands-on training in everything from security procedures and defensive tactics to first aid, CPR, suicide prevention, and communication skills. It’s a crucial step in preparing deputies to keep both inmates and fellow officers safe behind the walls of the county jail.

Deputy Lardizabal stood out among his peers, earning the Top Overall Performance Award at graduation. Deputy Thiele was also recognized for her efforts, coming in as first runner-up for the Top Academic Award—just one test question shy of claiming top academic honors.

Berrien County Sheriff Chuck Heit praised both deputies for their dedication and outstanding performance, and expressed his appreciation for their commitment to serving the community.

He also extended thanks to Genesee County Sheriff Christopher Swanson and his team, as well as the Michigan Sheriff’s Association and the Michigan Sheriff’s Coordinating and Training Council, for their ongoing efforts to make the academy a valuable and effective training ground for local officers.
