Verbal Argument Turns to Gunfire Outside a Dowagiac Hotel

An early morning argument between a man and his girlfriend Wednesday morning escalated into gunfire when the two pulled off the road into the parking lot of the Baymont Inn on Amerihost Drive in Dowagiac and continued the verbal confrontation outside of the hotel.

Dowagiac Director of Public Safety Steven Grinnewald says his department was called to the Baymont Inn around 5:15am Wednesday morning, January 6, 2021 on reports of several shots being fired.

Authorities arrived to find a car with several bullet holes in the hood of the vehicle but nobody in sight. From the photo accompanying the police report, it appears that at least 7 shots were fired, six into the hood and one into a headlamp on the Chevy involved.

Grinnewald says his officers spoke to people at the hotel, however were not able to gain much information about the incident. They then attempted, unsuccessfully, to locate the registered owner of the vehicle, after which the damaged vehicle was impounded for further investigation.

Officers later managed to track down the owner of the vehicle, at which point the investigation revealed that the owner, a 25 year old Dowagiac woman, and her boyfriend got into an argument and pulled into the Baymont Inn parking lot to continue the fight. During the argument she reportedly brandished a handgun that she had been carrying, and while she did not make any threats with the handgun she did say that she was going to shoot the vehicle they had been driving in so he could no longer use it.

Grinnewald says the boyfriend, an unidentified 26 year old Dowagiac man, then took the gun from her and fired several shots into the car, and both left the area on foot.

Officers recovered the handgun used during the incident, at which time they learned that the man involved in the case is currently on parole on armed robbery charges from a separate case.

Dowagiac Police arrested the man on charges of being a felon in possession of a firearm, unlawful discharge of a firearm, and two counts of felony firearm. He was taken to the Cass County Jail where he is being held on those charges as well as a parole detainer for violating his parole.

Grinnewald says the man’s name is being withheld pending his arraignment in Cass County District Court. Dowagiac Police were assisted by the Cass County Drug Enforcement Team in the case.
