If your travels took you to South Haven on Saturday, you might have witnessed a striking ceremony in tribute to “Citizens Heroes” there and elsewhere in Michigan’s Great Southwest in the form of a fly-over involving vintage World War II aircraft.
Similar ceremonies were conducted in Bangor, Covert, Saugatuck and Douglas this weekend, thanks to Star of the Lake Masonic Lodge in South Haven and the Saugatuck Masonic Lodge.
South Haven Area Emergency Services photographer Tom Renner captured the moment as shown above when the Hooligan Flight Team performed the fly-over in South Haven.
In past years a Salute to Veterans has been held on this corresponding weekend in South Haven, but because of COVID restrictions that couldn’t happen.
This year’s event theme was changed to be a salute to first responders, health care workers and “essential” employees as well as every citizen who has respected others by following the COVID safety protocols.
The South Haven Area Emergency Services aerial truck displayed a large American flag at American Legion Post 49 to greet the Flight Team, and honor guards from the American Legion and SHAES were present for a 21-gun salute and the playing of taps to honor fallen veterans during the COVID pandemic.
