The Berrien Community Foundation is spear-heading an effort to provide area ‘seniors in need’ with care kits containing essential items that many might struggle to afford on a fixed income. They asked us to share their appeal with MOTM readers:
Can you give some time to care for Berrien County senior citizens on Giving Tuesday?
Giving comes in many forms. On Giving Tuesday, we need volunteers to give their time to help us pack and wrap over 900 care kits for our local low-income, homebound senior citizens.
CLICK HERE to sign up to volunteer.
We ask our volunteers to pick up a kit of items and instructions on Giving Tuesday to take home and assemble into wrapped gift boxes that will be delivered to our area seniors. These Senior Care Kits contain items such as basic care items like toothpaste and lotion, but also other things like a pill cutter/storage container, a first aid kit, a magnifying glass and non-slip socks. We also add some fun things like adult coloring books, colored pencils and candy. This is a great volunteer project for families.
Once your kits are assembled and wrapped, you can return them to the Berrien Community Foundation the following Monday. The Senior Care Kits are then delivered by our friends at Area Agency on Aging and Meals on Wheels.
Berrien Community Foundation is partnering with Heart of Cook Foundation, Honor Credit Union, Corewell Health Foundation (formerly Spectrum Health Lakeland), Frederick S. Upton Foundation and private donations to make this project happen.
Pick Up: 9 a.m. – 6 p.m. Tuesday, November 29
Drop Off: 9 a.m. – 6 p.m. on Monday, December 5
Why Senior Care Kits:
1 in 10 Berrien County seniors are living below the poverty level.
When out-of-pocket medical costs are factored in, 1 in 7 are below the poverty level.
Every day, seniors are forced to choose between medicine, food or basic care items.
