Walk to help prevent domestic violence tomorrow in Benton Harbor

Set for this Saturday, October 24 is an event to spread awareness about domestic violence, and hopefully, to help prevent it.

Caring Connection CEO Robin McGinnis tells us the “Hope in Every Step Purple Ribbon Walk” will start at the Michigan Works office in Benton Harbor. The community will come together to raise awareness, honor survivors, and advocate for efforts to end domestic violence.

We have a speaker who is a survivor who will be talking about her experiences,” McGinnis said. “We’ll be handing out bags of supplies and things, and we invite anybody who’s interested to come and join us and learn about domestic violence.”

Caring Connections operates the Empowerment Center, a 23-bed domestic violence shelter in Benton Harbor that’s totally free of charge.

McGinnis says the Purple Ribbon Walk is being held in partnership with the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, and those who take part can choose their routes. One will take walkers up the bridge to the courthouse and back. The other will be around the Michigan Works parking lot. Or a walker could set their own route.

The walk will be free, and everyone’s invited. It starts at 11 a.m. and will run through 2 p.m.
