A ribbon cutting for Glenn Public School’s newly completed addition marked the beginning of a new chapter in the life of the rural school, located between South Haven and Saugatuck.
Serving as a consultant and collaborator on the 1,190-square-foot addition, Wightman is excited to celebrate the project’s completion. Expanding the existing 4,400-square-foot school required careful planning to accommodate and match the historic nature of the school building and its 168-year history.
Wightman’s Architectural Studio began by developing a feasibility study to identify potential expansion options. After discussions with school and community stakeholders as well as a public survey, the school district approved a $350,000 plan which included the creation of a multi-purpose room, a new front office and secure entry vestibule, an identifiable main entry to the school, an outdoor classroom, and a greenhouse learning center.
Voters approved a bond initiative in March 2020 by more than 76%. Construction began in the spring of 2021. “Wightman helped the district consider possibilities, define options, and identify elements that suited our needs now and far into the future,” said Superintendent Brian Scieszka from Glenn Public Schools.
Gregory Monberg, Director of Architecture at Wightman, shared how pleased he was with the project’s progress and subsequent success considering the bond initiative was approved just as the Covid-19 pandemic began. “We had to overcome some significant challenges relative to bidding, limited supply chain, poor weather, and subcontractor staffing levels while holding the line on cost and maintaining quality.”
In addition to the feasibility study and initial planning, Wightman also assisted the district in applying for a Michigan State Police Safety Grant. The grant awarded the district $48,000 to improve school safety and security by replacing and upgrading doors and security hardware. Both projects have helped Glenn Public School enhance safety, provide new indoor and outdoor learning spaces, and maintain the historical presence of the school.
