Drivers can expect to see construction barrels out on I-94 in Berrien County this week now that the Michigan Department of Transportation is resuming its $204 million reconstruction project of 8.5 miles of road between Benton Harbor and Stevensville.
MDOT says the work this year will be in the eastbound lanes between Puetz Road and Britain Avenue. Construction will begin next week between Washington Avenue and Britain Avenue as a temporary barrier wall is erected on the highway.
MDOT says throughout the construction season, the project will include several ramp closures and intermittent local road closures. Starting in March, closed ramps will include Niles Road to eastbound I-94, M-139 to eastbound I-94, Pipestone Road to eastbound I-94, and the eastbound I-94 exit to Napier Avenue. In all cases, detours will be posted.
Two lanes of travel in each direction of the highway will remain open throughout the project, which is expected to wrap up in the fall.
