County Cancels Animal Control Forum

People are passionate about many things, but none quite so much as politics and pets. When the two mix, a veritable powder keg situation can't be far behind. With that in mind, and in light of a tremendous outpouring of voices, opinions and arguments leading up to a planned public hearing on the Berrien County Animal Control Ordinance, county leaders have elected to cancel that public hearing "pending further review," so to speak.

If you count yourself among those who had planned to head to the public hearing to pound the table or even just to watch as a curious bystander, you'll have to channel that energy for some other time as the deal is off for now. The Berrien County Administrator's office issued a brief note of cancelation of the public hearing slated for next week to allow more time for review. Here's the message delivered this afternoon:

The Berrien County Board of Commissioners has cancelled a public hearing scheduled for December 15, 2016.  The purpose of the public hearing was to take comments on the proposed amendments to the Berrien County Animal Control Ordinance #11.

Chairman Jon Hinkelman stated, “The amount of commissioner input has been voluminous enough to show that we need more time to review and to provide explanation for areas of the ordinance.”

The vote on the amended ordinance will not occur on December 22, 2016 as previously scheduled.   Further action on the proposed amendments to the Berrien County Animal Control Ordinance has not been scheduled at this time.

Stay tuned for future updates on what has become a tabled issue for further review.
