Pilgrim Congregational United Church of Christ and Riverview Park Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), two long-standing and deeply rooted congregations in the St. Joseph community, are announcing a renewed and expanded partnership that has resulted in a merger of the two congregations. Leaders say the merger is designed to strengthen shared ministry, deepen community engagement, and enhance spiritual life across our local community.
In a release, the group explained that for years, both congregations have served as welcoming, inclusive, justice-oriented faith communities committed to fostering spiritual growth, supporting local families, and serving neighbors through outreach, service, and compassion. This new phase of collaboration builds upon that shared mission. Leaders from both congregations affirm that combining resources and vision will help them expand their impact and better embody their shared values of love, justice, and hospitality.
“As followers of Jesus, we are committed to sharing his love and justice in the world. Combining our two congregations helps us do that more than we could ever do separately,” said Dan Robinson, pastor of the newly combined churches.
“Our churches share a deep commitment to open and affirming ministry, and to building a more compassionate and connected community,” added Bruce Balfe, moderator of Pilgrim UCC.
Kathy Karsten, Chair of the Trustees for Riverview Park Christian Church (Disciples of Christ, echoed that sentiment, highlighting the spirit of unity behind the collaboration. “We are excited to walk side by side with Pilgrim Congregational UCC as we strengthen our ministries, support our neighbors, and proclaim God’s inclusive love.”
“We are more alike than we are different,” said Robinson, “and with discussions and compromise, we are forging a new and stronger future together as the Body of Christ.”
The two churches have already been meeting together at Pilgrim UCC church at Glenlord & Washington Avenue. (1200 West Glenlord Rd.) Riverview Park Christian sold their original building on Niles Road several years ago. It is now a Seventh Day Adventist church.
Pastor Robinson told MOTM that the combined congregation will have about 75 members, but has been growing in recent months. He explained that a decision is yet to be made on the national affiliation of the congregation.
“While we have merged into one congregation, we are in the process of deciding whether or not we will be a dual-affiliated congregation, which would mean being a part of both the United Church of Christ (Pilgrim’s denomination) and the Christian Church/Disciples of Christ (Riverview Park’s denomination). There are a number of dual-affiliated congregations in the United States, and we hope to make a decision in the first half of next year.”
Both congregations invite the public to participate in upcoming shared worship services and community events throughout the year, including a special Christmas Eve service at 4:30 PM on Wednesday, December 24th.
