The city of St. Joseph is seeking some grants to pay for improvements at Paddler Park, the new park at the former site of a water tower along Upton Drive.
Speaking to city commissioners Monday, Public Works Director Greg Grothous said Harbor Shores is seeking some new amenities at the park, and it’s offered to pay for them.
“The proposed project would include an ADA compliant restroom building, an accessible kayak launch, and sidewalk improvements within the park area,” Grothous said. “Total estimated cost for the proposed project is approximately $1 million.”
Grothous said the building would also have space to support a vendor.
The city is applying for two grants to support the project, each for $500,000, and each would come with a match. Grothous said if both grants are approved, the city could only accept one. He noted the match will be paid by Harbor Shores. City Manager Emily Hackworth said it ought to be enough for the project.
“They feel that that estimate is on the high end, and hopefully the real number is lower,” Hackworth said.
The maximum Harbor Shores contribution would be $550,000.
Commissioners approved both grant applications. They also approved a vendor license for Third Coast Surf Shop to operate at Paddler Park, renting out kayaks and paddleboards. It was the only bidder.
