The Annual Whirlpool Corporation Appliance Sale wrapped up another record-setting weekend in St. Joseph, raising $139,000 in net proceeds for United Way of Southwest Michigan, surpassing last year’s total of $134,000.
Senior Director of Organizational Sustainability Zack East notes, “This was our biggest sale since 2024, and the community showed up in a real way. Over 690 units were sold across the two days, and KitchenAid Small Appliances were the runaway favorite — 445 of those units alone. That’s not a surprise to anyone who’s worked this sale, because those items fly off the floor every year. But to see the total impact land at $139,000 is genuinely remarkable. That money goes directly to work right here in Southwest Michigan.”
The sale took place Saturday, May 2 and Sunday, May 3 at 211 Hilltop in St. Joseph, with the main floor operating out of Clark Logic Hilltop Business Center and major appliance pickup handled at the Feeding America warehouse on Empire in Benton Township. Both spaces for the sale were donated by their respective organizations. Whirlpool Corporation’s employee campaign volunteers sourced and inventoried hundreds of appliances for the event, spanning Maytag, KitchenAid, JennAir, Gladiator, and Whirlpool brand products.
“What this community does with an opportunity like this is something I never take for granted,” said United Way President and CEO Anna Murphy. “Every year I think, how do we top this? And every year, the answer is that the people of Southwest Michigan find a way. $139,000 raised in a single weekend is extraordinary, and it all flows back to the programs and services that help families right here in Berrien, Cass, and Van Buren Counties. We are so deeply grateful to everyone who shopped, volunteered, and made this weekend what it was.”
Rob Moser, who serves as the chair for this year’s employee campaign and as the vice president of design for Whirlpool Corporation, reflected on what the milestone means for the partnership. “There is real passion behind this sale — from our employees who spend months sourcing and preparing inventory, to the volunteers who show up all weekend long ready to help customers find what they need. To see that work translate into $139,000 for United Way of Southwest Michigan is incredibly gratifying. This is exactly what we mean when we talk about improving life at home — and we mean that for the whole community.”
United Way also extended its thanks to Stevensville-based Hassel Free Moving, led by Tyrone Hassel, for providing professional loading and delivery services for major appliance purchases throughout the weekend. The service is still working this week and next week to fulfill deliveries, which also experienced growth year over year.
