South Haven Speaker Series to explore the night sky

The next engagement of the South Haven Speaker Series will be taking a look at the night sky and exploring the effects of light pollution.

South Haven Speaker Series President Elaine Stephens told us last month Dr. Anne Blackwell, an astronomer at the University of Michigan, will be in town on Thursday, May 14.

She’s part of the Dark Skies movement,” Stephens said. “She’s very involved in that at the Michigan level. She’s going to talk about what happens with the increase in bright lights at night, how that is endangering human lives, animal lives, and what we can do about it”

In the dark-sky movement, communities are limiting the amount of light that homes and businesses can disperse. Dr. Blackwell says she’s concerned about how disconnected we’re becoming from nature and our ancestral knowledge with the night sky increasingly being lost to us.

Blackwell’s engagement, “How Bright Lights Endanger Starry Skies,” will be held next Thursday, May 14 at the Lake Michigan College South Haven campus starting at 7 p.m. Admission will be $10.
