Feel free to sing the familiar tune in your head as you read this with a small editorial change at the end: Like a good neighbor, St. Joe is there.

That’s the plan tonight for St. Joseph City Commissioners who are being asked to approve a letter of support for the nearby communities of New Buffalo Township and Chikaming Tonwship who are collaborating on a major utility and streetscape project in Union Pier which straddles both townships. The plan is to install a parking lot to serve the business district at Union Pier as a part of the streetscape project, and New Buffalo Township has asked for letters of support from other local communities. They made the request through the Strategic Leadership Council, and city staff members have drafted a letter of support to be signed by Mayor Mike Garey on behalf of the City Commission. The request is part of the city’s consent agenda tonight.

The city has prepared a letter to be sent to Lee Shirey, the Economic Development representative for Michigan and Wisconsin at the U.S. Department of Commerce’s Economic Development Administration.

The draft letter expresses the support of the St. Joseph community for the grant application for the Union Pier Parking Development project which is slated to provide 30 to 35 much-needed parking spaces to the community. The goal is for the parking to help the current business community there to flourish and encourage future growth.

This fall’s streetscape proposals calls for a multi-phased redevelopment including streetscapes, infrastructure improvements, parking enhancements, public restrooms and pedestrian/bicycle facilities. The specific grant under consideration is designed to address the critical need for customer-friendly parking to spark the re-purposing of vacant buildings and an economic impact on current businesses there.

So, like a good neighbor, St. Joe is there for New Buffalo and Chikaming Townships.
