Two Rivers Coalition to Host Free Online Presentation on Plastics Pollution in the Great Lakes

We routinely hear about plastic pollution of the world’s oceans, but here’s a fact that might startle you to the point of helping to do something about the issue. More than 22-million pounds of plastic end up in the Great Lakes alone each year. That is plastic that never goes away, it just breaks down into smaller and smaller particles called microplastics or microbeads that accumulate in the environment.

Here in Southwest Michigan, the Two Rivers Coalition (TRC) has announced that they will host a free on-line presentation about this important topic on Tuesday, March 23rd at 7:00 pm, and you can be a part of it.

TRC is teaming up with a speaker from the Alliance for the Great Lakes for the presentation which will include the following topics:

  • The importance of the Great Lakes ecosystem
  • The threat of plastic pollution (including microplastics) to the Great Lakes
  • Actions we can take to address plastic pollution

TRC is a volunteer environmental group active in Southwest Michigan and focused on the water quality and overall environmental health of the Black River and Paw Paw River watersheds.

The coalition conducts activities for volunteers such as stream monitoring for macroinvertebrates in the Spring and Fall every year. They also conduct annual E. coli testing of streams in both watersheds, and they sponsor paddles and other activities to introduce people to the beauty and importance of our streams, wetlands, and floodplain environments.
