Van Buren Sheriff warns of phone scammers claiming to be his deputies

Van Buren County Sheriff Daniel Abbott is warning that scammers, claiming to be from his office, are calling residents, trying to collect money.  Abbott says the callers are fake, they are not deputies.  Potential victims should not engage with the callers and report the instances to the Sheriff’s office.

Here is the full test of Sheriff Abbott’s warning to residents:

There is a scam going on right now that the suspects are using names of deputies that work at our office and are trying to collect money.   The caller is identifying themselves as the deputy, sergeant, lieutenant,  etc.   I was advised that other law enforcement agencies are experiencing the same thing in our area right now.   We have received several calls today as well as yesterday about this from the public.  Our office would NEVER call anyone and have them send money directly to us to bail folks out, cover fines and costs, etc.  When these numbers are traced, a lot of them come back out of the country as well as to other states.    The suspects at times are also using names of people that may be in your family and being pushy about you sending money to bail them out as well.   If there is ever a question about anything like this, call our office to speak to the person who is supposedly calling you and it will get cleared up immediately.
