Farm Accident Claims 7th Generation Owner of Freehling Family Farm in Baroda Twp

Tragedy has struck the family grain farm of Berrien County 8th District Commissioner Teri Sue Freehling today. Baroda-Lake Township Police Chief Shawn Martin reports that Freehling’s 45-year old husband, Patrick Freehling was found dead in a barn on the Freehling Farm at 11573 Celeveland Avenue in Baroda Township around 7am this morning, Thursday, May 2nd, 2019.

Chief Martin says his department was dispatched to the grain farm when a farm worker found Freehling dead in the barn where he had been working early today.

Martin says, “This appears to be a tragic farm incident. There are no signs of foul play. An autopsy will take place at a later time.”

Martin’s department was assisted at the scene by the Berrien County Sheriff’s Department and the Medical Examiner’s Office.

Teri Sue and Patrick Freehling had been married for 16 years and managed the family grain farm together. They have two daughters, Marissa and Natalie, and are the seventh generation to live on the family’s farm. Freehling serves the 8th District on the Berrien County Board of Commissioners representing the citizens of Baroda Township, the Village of Baroda, the City of Bridgman, Lake Charter Township, Oronoko Township’s Precinct 3, and part of Precinct 1 north of Shawnee Road in Oronoko Township.

Patrick Freehling was a U.S. Navy Veteran. He and his wife operated the 200-acre grain farm together with a team of farm workers.
