The St. Joseph Downtown Development Authority has advanced a revised paid parking plan on to the full city commission, which will consider it this month.

Speaking at a DDA meeting this week, St. Joseph Community Development Director Kelly Ewalt said following the controversial rollout and subsequent suspension of paid parking last year, a great deal of work has gone into revising the plan. She noted if paid parking returns this year, it will be drastically scaled back.

Paid parking is on the highest demand areas only,” Ewalt said. “You can see the streets…Lots are free. All the ADA spots will be free. They will not be charged. City of St. Joseph residents will be free.”

Ewalt said the plan this year is for paid parking, on street only, from June 1 through Labor Day, 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. She noted after much consultation with residents and business owners, the parking subgroup has heard it all, from the good to the bad to the ugly.

The St. Joseph City Commission will consider the plan at its March 16 meeting.
