Ground has been broken on a major streetscape project in downtown Dowagiac.
The city says the project along South Front Street will extend downtown’s look and infrastructure two blocks south, linking the area directly to the Dowagiac Creek. It describes the work as the first phase of a long-term plan to create a continuous corridor running from south of downtown all the way to North Front Street.
The project includes new pavement, sidewalks, lighting, parking, and upgraded water and storm sewer systems, along with environmental improvements to protect the creek.
Mayor Patrick Bakeman says the effort represents years of planning and will benefit the community for decades, helping strengthen connections between downtown and the waterfront. It’s backed in part by a $668,000 grant from the Michigan Economic Development Corporation, combined with local funding.
Construction is expected to continue through August.
