The New Hong Kong House Fades Into History on Hollywood Road

When the coronavirus pandemic led to the shutdown of most businesses across the region, the Chen family, owners and operators of the New Hong Kong House alongside Roger’s Foodland on Hollywood Road in St. Joseph announced the indefinite closure of the long running Chinese restaurant with the simple statement, “The Chen Family prioritizes the safety of our patrons and friends. We are sorry for any inconvenience.”

All indications were that the popular restaurant would make a return like most others when the shelter-in-place mandate was lifted.

Sadly, that won’t be the case as owner Judy made a very simple retirement announcement on her Facebook Page Monday. She said, very simply, “To our loyal friends and customers, We would like everyone to know that we are retiring and the restaurant is now permanently closed. Thank you for your love and support over the years. We will miss you! Judy and family.”

The restaurant survived the ups and downs of the marketplace for several decades, first along Niles Avenue in the Southtown neighborhood of St. Joseph alongside Rumors Hair Salon, and later when they relocated to their new home at 4075 Hollywood Road, alongside Roger’s Foodland.
