Berrien RESA’s “Highly Effective” Superintendent Gets Contract Extension to 2024

Not only is the Berrien RESA superintendent rated “highly effective” by the organization’s board of education, he now has a contract through the end of June in 2024. That’s the key result of today’s Board of Education meeting in Berrien Springs.

During today’s board meeting, the Berrien RESA Board conducted their annual performance review of Superintendent Eric Hoppstock. The Board evaluated Mr. Hoppstock using a tool provided by the Michigan Association of School Boards which rated his performance in five areas:

  • Governance and board relations
  • Stakeholder relations
  • Employee relations
  • Educational leadership
  • Operations
  • Finance

Hoppstock received a “highly effective” rating in all areas assessed by the board. That positive review resulted in an extension of Superintendent Hoppstock’s current contract by one year, allowing him to continue to serve the district through June 30, 2024.

Berrien RESA Board President Dr. Michael Lindley, says, “The Berrien RESA Board of Education is very pleased with Eric’s service to the district,” and adds, “Eric is a forward-thinking leader who is dedicated to continuous improvement, transparency and accountability. Even with the additional challenges of COVID-19 during his first year as superintendent, he has successfully set the pace for programming and services to meet the needs of our education community. The board is excited to watch the district continue to grow under his leadership including the development of a new strategic plan, new community partnerships and the completion of a multi-year remodeling project at Blossomland Learning Center.”

For over three decades, Hoppstock has provided educational services to schools and students across Berrien County. Beginning his career at Berrien RESA in 1987, Hoppstock was a school psychologist, went on to become the supervisor of the district’s Special Education Department and then the district’s Assistant Superintendent and Chief Academic Officer. Eric has also served as a state and national leader, helping shape special education legislation and policy.
