Dredging is slated to get underway in the South Haven Harbor this week.
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers says dredging projects are essential for maintaining safe navigational depths within the harbor and to support ongoing marine traffic and port activities.
The dredging will take place at the harbor entrance to Lake Michigan, between breakwater heads, and upstream to North Shore Drive. The dredged material will be transported through submerged pipeline and discharged near shore near the intersection of JR Monroe Boulevard and South Haven Street, continuing south in four to eight feet of water. Samples of the dredged material will be taken to confirm it’s suitable for beach replenishment.
The Army Corps says the submerged pipeline will be marked with orange buoys every 500 feet and a bright yellow, lit pontoon at each end. Boaters are asked to use caution near the dredging equipment.
The dredging will continue into July.
